Suvo Strategic Minerals turns nickel slag into high-strength, low-carbon cement

Suvo Strategic Minerals Limited (ASX: SUV) has announced promising results from recent laboratory trials aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of cement production.

The trials involved three samples of nickel slag and achieved an average compressive strength of 29.9 Megapascals (MPa) after just seven days, with the highest sample reaching an impressive 37.5 MPa. This development highlights the potential of nickel slag, which is often stockpiled or sent to landfill, as a sustainable alternative in cement manufacturing. Notably, nickel slag boasts a zero-carbon footprint, as its carbon emissions are accounted for by the original nickel producers.

The nickel slag used in these trials was supplied by PT Huadi Nickel-Alloy Indonesia (PT HNI), one of Indonesia's largest nickel producers, which has substantial stockpiles of the material as part of its operations. In September 2024, Suvo entered into a Co-operation Agreement with PT HNI to explore potential commercial arrangements, including partnerships and ongoing offtake agreements for the nickel slag.

These encouraging test results mark a significant step forward in Suvo's negotiations with PT HNI and pave the way for the commercialisation of a low-carbon cement solution. UNM will soon begin a second round of laboratory trials, focusing on additional properties such as slump, initial and final setting times, and dry shrinkage of the low-carbon cement. The outcomes of both trials will be shared with PT HNI as the collaboration progresses.

Suvo Strategic Minerals continues to advance its commitment to sustainability within the cement industry, leveraging innovative materials to help mitigate climate change.

Executive Chairman Aaron Banks commented: “We are excited to have commenced this work stream in Indonesia testing the by-product of one of the Country’s largest miners, with our ultimate goal being to manufacture an environmentally friendly and low carbon alternative to Portland cement"
