Three Decades of Prominence on the Indian Subcontinent

World Cement,

KHD Humboldt Wedag is celebrating 30 years in the ever-growing markets of India. In 1979, KHD supplied India’s first trademark ball mill for then Diamond Cement for a cement grinding circuit. Later, in 1982, KHD entered actively into the Indian markets in collaboration with Cimmco Birla Ltd. From the end of 2000 onwards, the cement business was catered from a subsidiary established in New Delhi, India as Humboldt Wedag India Pvt Ltd. Since then, the organisation has grown rapidly and has now accomplished 10 years of very strong market presence. With 300 employees and as part of the global KHD ISO 9001 certification, the company is geared up for providing more services and efficient solutions to the industry.

Today, KHD supplies technology and equipment to all the major cement manufacturing groups in India and has contributed nearly 50% of the added capacity installed in the Indian cement industry in the past 4 – 5 years. The company’s presence in India totals 71 grinding and 31 pyroprocessing references in just 10 years. KHD is also proud to have executed India’s first 10 000 tpd plant, which is considered in India to have state-of-the-art technology because of its unique four tower preheater, large size and efficient operation. The plant is located in an environmentally protected Himalayan valley, so the emphasis was to provide an ecologically friendly solution. The challenge of the difficult and hilly terrain was overcome by meticulous planning and alternate solutions.

Today in India, KHD is preferred for executing large capacity plants. An example are the two 10 000 tpd complete plants recently ordered by Ultratech Cement Ltd. In 2006 the group also ordered three 8000 tpd plants, which are now in operation. With all these orders, the company has managed to secure its top position in India for the volume of capacity ordered.

Another feather in the cap is the world record with Shree Cement. KHD India, in sync with the Shree Cement team, has executed Shree’s lines VII and VIII in just 367 and 330 days, respectively, way ahead of the industry benchmark of 630 days. This was made possible by the detailed planning, team work, commitments to deadlines, repeat nature of the projects and, most importantly, Shree Cement’s trust in KHD.

To give more strength to the varied KHD business, various strategic alliances are in place. Important among them is KHD’s strategic partnership agreement with McNally Bharat (MBE) to offer EPC packages to the cement industry in India. With this collaboration, HW India and MBE are working on EPC opportunities.

KHD roller presses are already a big success in the cement industry. In India itself, KHD has supplied more than 75 roller presses, which will all be commissioned by 2012. Further expanding the applications to the mineral industry, The Weir Group PLC will now be the official representative of KHD Humboldt Wedag International AG worldwide. This group is officially announced by KHD as the best service provider for roller presses in the minerals industry.

HW India has also entered into a strategic partnership agreement with Transparent Technologies Pvt Ltd to offer heat recovery system packages to existing and new cement plant customers in India. An agreement between the two for global entrepreneurship is also lined up. This was taken under consideration of the increasing demand for reduced energy utilisation in cement plants. Henceforth, KHD looks forward to acting as a single point solution to all the concerns of the cement sector.

According to Jouni Salo, CEO of KHD, the acquisition success confirms the validity of the strategic shift towards the BRIC states: “Today, more than 50% of our order backlog is generated in Russia and India. In this respect, we benefit greatly from our strong local presence and from the increasing urbanisation and industrialisation in these regions. Cement is a local business.”

According to Martin Gierse, who is currently leading the Indian operations: “The company has made a major contribution towards achieving high technical standards for fuel and power consumption in Indian cement plants, and has thereby earned the respect and trust of the major local cement producers. The recently awarded new contracts for big units underline our commitment to state-of-the art technology combined with strong and focused project execution.”
