World Cement,
A new subsidised cement scheme, Amma Cement, has been launched in the state of Tamil Nadu in southern India. The scheme is designed to provide heavily subsidised cement products for eco-friendly and low cost housing, and to cater for low and middle class customers throughout the state.
Amma Cement will be priced at around Rs.190 per 50 kg bag (local cement companies price their products at approximately Rs.370 – 385 per bag). According to reports, the state government will procure around two lakh tonnes of cement every month from manufacturers. Under the scheme, each person with an approved building plan or approval from a local body can procure up 50 bags for the construction of a 100 ft2 area and up to 750 bags for the construction of a 1500 ft2 area.
Tamil Nadu Cement Corporation will be the nodal agency, while the scheme will be implemented by Tamil Nadu’s Civil Supplies Corporation and Rural Development department.
