Terra Cement Inc. forms joint venture for sustainable cement production in Australia

World Cement,

Terra Cement Inc. has entered into a joint venture agreement with South Australia’s Ore Mines International Pty Ltd (OMI) to form a new company – Terra Cement Australia Pty Ltd (TCA). The new company will market Terra’s proprietary process (patent pending) for producing sustainable cement using ash in Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. The joint venture is due to begin operating by the end of 2014.

TCA will convert existing cement plants and mixing facilities in Australia in order to manufacture hydrogel made from flyash. By adding organic proprietary liquids, this produces sustainable cement. According to Terra, this cement offers greater strength, durability and a faster curing time than ordinary Portland cement, while also avoiding thermal energy use and CO2 emissions during the production process.

OMI has carried out preliminary testing of the ash available in Australia, concluding that it is suitable to use in the manufacture of sustainable cement. OMI has ordered the design for the conversion of its existing facilities, a process that is due to be completed in the near future.

“As collaborators with a global reach and local market knowledge, industry leaders such as OMI play a significant role driving innovation to market. OMI’s expertise enables rapid commercialisation by freeing us to focus on the development of our core technology. Likewise, our technology gives OMI access to a large, new market that would not exist without Terra,” said Henry Val, CEO of Terra Cement.
