Semen Indonesia celebrates quarry reclamation

Semen Indonesia has planted a total of 57 362 trees since it began reforestation of quarries in 2010. The company has recently celebrated the completion of post-mining reclamation with a procession attended by the Director of Semen Gresik and the head of partner forestry organisation Perhutani in East Java.
Sunardi Prionomurti, Director of Semen Gresik, explained that the company operates a tiered mining operation, wherein one plot is completed before moving on to another. Currently, 1130.7 hectares have been reclaimed since 2010 with trees including teak, mahogany and tamarind, among others. This tiered mining system is used at all the company’s plants and enables the company to better preserve the environment and reclaim the mined land back into forests.
