Cement companies to receive flyash from Sri Lankan power plant project
Minister Keheliya Rambukwella has announced that phase two of Sri Lanka’s Puttalam Coal Power Project began in April and unit three is forecast to commence operations in September 2014. Each plant will produce around 75 000 tpa of flyash, which will be utilised by local industry. At first it will be sold to five companies, including Fuji Cement, part of the Tokyo Cement Group, and Holcim Lanka.
On a recent visit to the country, Holcim CEO Bernard Fontana outlined plans to increase the Group’s production capacity whilst maintaining its focus on sustainability as well as local engagement and development.
“Holcim's business strategy is based on growth in both developed economies and emerging, high-growth markets and Sri Lanka occupies an important place in this context. As a global leader, we strive to set benchmarks to promote sustainability and innovation across our enterprise. Keeping in line with the objectives, some of our key focuses for the next 5 years would be to increase the cement grinding capacity at Ruhunu Cement Plant by 0.6 million t to reach 1 million t capacity per year, capacity upgrade on Geocycle shredding line to enhance waste management solutions together with upgrading kiln system, building up clinker warehouse to better cater the market demand with uninterrupted supply, process efficiency improvement via Sludge drying facility. We also intend to make considerable improvements to our distribution by enhancing our logistics,” stated Fontana.
Holcim Lanka’s cement sales reached 1.5 million t in 2013, while revenue was reported at approximately US$152.7 million.
