Zuari Cement Limited, through its subsidiary Gulbarga Cement Limited (GCL), is setting up a cement plant, along with a 50 MW captive power plant, in Gulbarga, Karnataka. The plant will be located 28 km from Gulbarga city on the Gulbarga-Bangalore highway and will have a designed capacity of 2 million tpa of clinker and 3.23 million tpa of cement.

Gulbarga Cement is in possession of 1821 acres of land and received approval for the same from the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board [KIADB] on the 3 September 2014. Following the foundation stone laying ceremony, which was held on 30 September 2014, the first step of the project will be the start of the mining activity. The foundation stone laying ceremony was inaugurated by Nabil Francis (Managing Director of Zuari Cement) along with Ramesh Suryanarayana (Director of Business Development), accompanied by the local employees of Gulbarga Cement headed by Surendra Pattar (Site Manager), other senior executives of Zuari Cement, government officials and the farmers who have given away the land.

Strategically, the unit will be a very important investment for Italcementi in India. Following completion of the project, Zuari Cement will have a total capacity of 10 million tpa, growing to be one of the largest cement manufacturers in southern India. The additional capacity expansion will strengthen its presence and cater to market expansion plans in southern, western and northeastern markets.
