India donates cement to war torn Northern Sri Lanka

The Indian government has promised 400 000 bags of cement to help civilians in Northern Sri Lanka rebuild and repair homes, damaged by the civil war. Each family is expected to receive eight bags each. The cement supplies have been procured from Ultratech Cement Lanka Pvt. Ltd.

The bags will be distributed at a rate of 10 000 bags a day for the next 40 – 45 days. Earlier, India supplied 530 000 metal roofing sheets to contribute to the rebuilding effort. The total cost of the cement consignment is estimated to be 200 million rupees (US$ 1.75 million), and will be financed from the 12.5 billion rupee grant assistance, announced by the Indian government for reconstruction work in Sri Lanka in May 2009.

The Indian High Commissioner stated at the handover that all reconstruction efforts by India were directed by priorities and requirements projected by Sri Lanka. As well as providing building materials, the Indian assistance also includes a proposal to help rebuild schools, hospitals and homes as well as help in reconstructing railways for which the Indian government has already offered credit of US$ 425 million.
