Lafarge has reportedly temporarily suspended operations at Syrian plant
According to reports on Reuters, Lafarge has temporarily suspended operations at its cement plant in Syria and removed personnel from the site in light of security concerns in the region. The news agency has cited comments from a spokesperson at the construction materials firm confirming that the facility has not suffered from any major damage.
The 3 million tpa Lafarge cement plant is located in Ein Al-Arab, some 160 km northeast of Aleppo. The plant, which began producing clinker in 2010, was designed to meet the highest international environment and safety standards and also features a 60 MW thermal power plant to ensure a more stable electricity supply. The plant represents a significant foreign investment in Syria’s industrial sector, whilst also helping to meet domestic demand for cement.
