World Cement,

Construction of the new PPC Zimbabwe cement plant in Harare is set to begin next month, according to an interview in The Herald Business with PPC Managing Director Mr Njombo Lekula. The company has reportedly secured US$18 million towards the construction of the plant, which is currently in the preliminary stages. The Environment Impact Assessment has been completed and the project has been given the go-ahead.

A feasibility study is also being conducted on a clinker production plant in Mashonaland Central, though Mr Lekula said that the Harare plant takes priority at this time. PPC Zimbabwe currently produces 1.2 million tpa of cement and plans to double its capacity by building new facilities in Mt Darwin, Harare and Tete. Mr Lekula added that the company is seeking further opportunities for exports in the region. He told the newspaper: “Our export market margins are impacted by logistics. Sometimes the exports are not very stable, hence the need to look at both the local and export markets to ensure sustainability.”

The new plant in Harare is set to have an annual cement production capacity of 1 million t.
