Cemenco grinding plant commissioned in Liberia

World Cement,

HeidelbergCement has sucessfully commissioned the new mill at its grinding plant in Monrovia, Liberia. The 0.5 million tpa ball mill plus high efficiency separator, filter, fan and flow meter took an investment of around US$14 million. The mill is powered by a rented 5.7 MW generator.

Cemenco, Heidelberg’s Liberian subsidiary, is the only cement producer in Liberia and forms part of Heidelberg’s strategic position in West Africa. The country’s economic outlook is positive, at 7.5% in 2013 according to the IMF, while 5 – 6% growth is predicted for sub-Saharan Africa over this year and next.

“The construction of the new cement mill in Liberia is in line with our strategy of modernising and expanding clinker and cement capacities in emerging markets,” says Dr Bernd Scheifele, Chairman of the Managing Board of HeidelbergCement. “In particular the countries of sub-Saharan Africa have a very high growth potential due to their early stage of industrialisation. In Ghana, we recently increased the cement grinding capacity at our Tema cement plant and are currently building a new cement mill in Takoradi. Together with our existing plants in this region, the new mill in Liberia strengthens our coastal network in West Africa.”
