Dangote Cement reiterates call for concrete roads in Nigeria

Aliko Dangote, Chairman of Dangote Cement, is calling for the government of Nigeria to adopt concrete roads instead of bitumen, noting that concrete offers a more durable option that is more cost-effective. Concrete roads require less maintenance than bitumen roads and have a longer lifetime.
Dangote Cement is targeting production capacity of 100 million tpy by 2020. It currently has almost 30 million tpy cement capacity in Nigeria alone and is expanding across Africa and into Nepal.
If Nigeria did decide to opt for concrete roads, it would be following in the path of India, where the government has decided that concrete is the more cost-effective option in the long-term. The guarantee of highway contracts provides a more stable environment in which the cement industry can flourish.
