Menzel construct special motor for cement plant in Oman

World Cement,

Menzel Elektromotoren has completed the construction of a motor fitted into a special enclosure for a cement plant in Oman.

The motor specialist had been commissioned to manufacture an exact replica of the plant's mill drive, since the performance of the original motor sourced from China did not satisfy expectations.

After the order had been placed, Menzel Elektromotoren CEO Mathis Menzel traveled to Oman in late 2014 to inspect the site and ensure the replacement motor would be 100% compatible.

It was impossible for the customer to carry out any on-site modifications to accommodate a new motor in a different design. In addition, they preferred to retain the old starter. Menzel Elektromotoren therefore constructed a 6-pole replacement motor with a performance of 4200 kW and a speed of 993 min-1, sized exactly according to the measurements taken.

Like the original motor, the replacement does not feature a terminal box for the rotor connection – all cables directly run into the housing. Taking the exact measurements on location ensured a 100% fit as well as full electrical compatibility. The electrical requirements alone would have allowed for a smaller motor design. Instead, in order to achieve the necessary dimensions and shaft diameter, the engineers constructed a special size 900 enclosure based on the compact, state-of-the-art design Menzel motors are known for. Following this first ever cooperation with Menzel as drive manufacturer, the customer has gone on to commission more products for a number of other projects, and has just approved the first motor after final testing in Berlin in July 2015.
