PPC hosts students for learning day

World Cement,
South African cement manufacturer PPC has held a learning day, hosting 30 students from New Nation School at the company’s Jupiter plant. The one-day visit was designed to highlight career opportunities in the industry and share information about PPC’s bursary scheme. Students received a ‘behind the scenes’ plant visit, career conversations with site employees and the chance to take part in team-building activities.
The New Nation School is home to students from disadvantaged backgrounds, many of whom live in shelters in and around Johannesburg. The learning day was inspired by an internal PPC event earlier this year, when CEO Darryll Castle and other PPC executives spent a day at one of the shelters that supports many of the school’s students.
Francie Shonhiwa, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility at PPC, explained: “(M)ost of them do not readily have opportunities to be directly exposed to the career options available to them in industries such as our own. Today was thus all about empowering them with information that they can use to shape new futures for themselves, and opening their realm of experience to new possibilities.”
