HeidelbergCement’s Sierra Leone Cement Corp Ltd (LEOCEM) has announced that it will start production of slag cement in June 2014. LEOCEM is the only cement manufacturer in the country, operating one grinding plant in the country’s capital, Freetown, and is a major supplier of cement in Sierra Leone. The announcement was made at the launch of the company’s 20th anniversary celebration, held at its Freetown plant.
Victor John, Head of Laboratory at LEOCEM, stated that the planned production of slag cement was based on demand from consumers. The product will be of a high-grade quality, suitable for use in deep water concreting applications. Arne Johansen, Managing Director of LEOCEM, commented that the move represented part of the company’s efforts to enhance productivity for the good of the country. Johansen further noted that the cost of cement in Sierra Leone is relatively cheap compared to other African counties, especially considering the size of the plant and the expense of operating in a small market.
The Freetown plant began operations in 1994. Since then, two mills have been established to increase productivity and capacity in order to meet local demand. In celebration of its 20th anniversary, the plant is expected to handover a recreational centre as gift to the local community.
