Cemex has launched a new learning scheme that provides a scholarship of 20% for all students from Upper Egypt and provides the facilities where all classes are held. The class is composed of 60 students, with an average of five years’ work experience in a wide range of industries at both small companies and large international corporations. The MBA programme will give students the opportunity to tackle real-time projects and to apply classroom insights to the business issues that matter to them.

“The best way to address Upper Egypt’s need for an educated labour force is to expand education opportunities,” said Jorge Alvarez Fuentes, Mexico’s ambassador to Egypt.

Expanding educational opportunities in Egypt is a major focus of Cemex. Since 2000, the company has implemented a variety of value-added programmes, including its long-term partnership with Assiut University and the Food-for-Education initiative set up with the UN World Food Program.

“This unique and one-of-a-kind partnership between Cemex and an internationally recognised business school combines rigorous and real-world learning. The programme is designed to develop high potential executives to become Egypt’s next senior business leaders,” said Sergio Menendez, President of Cemex in Egypt.

Cemex has previously released plans to invest in Egypt, announcing earlier this year that it would spend US$100 million in the country in order to boost cement operations. The investment included expanding, and lowering emissions, at the Assiut plant. Furthermore, the company intends to support housing, commercial development and infrastructure projects, including road construction. These improvements are expected to further enhance the company’s affordable housing efforts, creating new jobs in Upper Egypt.
