Tanga Cement celebrates ground-breaking of new kiln line

Tanga Cement has broken ground on a new kiln line project that will reportedly add 775 000 tpa clinker capacity to the existing plant. This marks the start of the second expansion project at the plant, following commissioning of a second cement mill and packing line in 2009/10. Recently, Tanga Cement has been importing clinker to meet local demand. With this expansion, the plant’s production capacity will reach 1.275 million tpa of clinker.

“Apart from increasing our clinker manufacturing capacity to match the current cement grinding, this project will also reduce cement manufacturing cost, improve quality and increase cement availability,” Tanga Cement Board Chairman Lau Masha said at the ground-breaking ceremony.

The project will be carried out with Chinese firm, Sinoma. It is scheduled for completion in 2015.

Tanzania’s annual cement demand is estimated at around 3 million t. Cement production capacity is undergoing something of a growth spurt at the moment, as new players enter the market and existing producers expand their facilities.
