Carmeuse lime plant on track in Oman

One of the world’s biggest lime companies, Carmeuse, says it is on track to complete its 8-kiln lime plant in Oman in the second half of this year. Each kiln will have a capacity of 125 000 tpa of lime. The company says on its website that it decided to build the plant in Oman’s Dhofar Governorate because of the availability of very high quality limestone reserves, the presence of a free zone promoting industrial developments (Salalah Free Zone) and a well-located port, giving access to the surrounding Gulf countries and to India, where demand for lime products is high. The new plant is likely to contribute to greater volumes of cargo handled at the port, which last year handled nearly 8 million t of cargo, up 9.5% from the previous year. Mineral, cement and fuel exports account for much of this growth. The port is building a new General Cargo Terminal to cater for the expanding demand.

The new plant required an investment of US$180 million and is hoped to act as a showcase attracting further investment to the region.
