ARM Cement reportedly granted land for new project

Reports from Kenya indicate that the county government of Kitui County has reached an agreement with ARM Cement Limited granting permission for the cement company to mine limestone and establish a new cement plant. The plant will take advantage of the limestone deposits in a section of Ngaaie hill in Kyuso District. ARM Cement has reportedly been prospecting in the area for the last five years and received the go-ahead at a consultative meeting last week attended by representatives of the local community, officials from the cement plant and the Kitui County Government. Some 250 households are expected to relocate to make way for the new quarry. In return, ARM is offering compensation for the land and structures in the area, and is also setting aside KES10 million pa for community projects, which will be handed over to the community for their use.
The new clinker and cement grinding line will offer some 2000 direct jobs and 1500 indirect jobs.
An earlier news story published on AllAfrica.com had suggested that the transaction was to be suspended until all the legalities had been looked into.
