East African Portland Cement Company has reportedly embarked on its KES1 billion kiln and packing plant upgrade project. The plant is said to be upgrading the mechanical and electrical components of its packing machines, improving the bag conveying system, installing a baghouse to replace the ESP, retrofitting the raw mill gear box and replacing three sections of the kiln shell, among other things, in a project that is likely to see the plant shut down for 6 weeks.

With this project, the company will improve plant performance and reduce emissions and energy consumption.

EAPCC is also reported to be establishing a 4 MW power plant to run on waste gases from its Athi River plant, which would cut electricity costs by KES500 million per annum.
