HeidelbergCement increases its cement capacity in Ghana

World Cement,

HeidelbergCement has announced the establishment of a new 0.8 million tpa cement mill at its grinding plant in Takoradi, Ghana. The US$30 million investment includes the construction of a new clinker and cement silo, in addition to new cement bag packing and dispatch facilities. The expansion project will help the company to meet demand in Ghana, and its coastal cities in particular. Commissioning is expected to occur in late 2014. Once completed, HeidelbergCement will have a capacity of 4.4 million tpa in the country.

The company also inaugurated a new 1 million t cement mill at its grinding plant in Tema, approximately 25 km from Ghana’s capital Accra, in November 2012. HeidelbergCement is carrying out projects to the tune of US$400 million in sub-Saharan Africa. These will increase cement capacity by 3 million t and clinker capacity by 1.5 million t.

“The construction of the new cement mill in Ghana is another project in the context of our strategy of expanding our clinker and cement capacities in growth markets. In particular the countries of sub-Saharan Africa have a very high growth potential due to their early stage of industrialisation and rich natural resources”, stated Dr Bernd Scheifele, Chairman of the Managing Board of HeidelbergCement. “We recently increased the mill capacity at our Tema plant. Together, the two cement grinding plants in Ghana constitute our largest capacities in West Africa. With the new mill, we want to expand our capacities in line with the rapidly growing cement consumption and maintain our dominant position in this key market.”
