New cement grinding plant proposed in Guinea-Bissau

The IFC is considering a proposal from Scancem, a subsidiary of HeidelbergCement, and Maxime Cardoz, a private individual, regarding the construction of a 200 000 tpy cement grinding plant in Guinea-Bissau. The Cardoz Cimentos de Bissau project, which is 60% owned by Cardoz and 40% by Scancem, would be located 1.5 km from the port of Bissau. This region accounts for half of the country’s cement consumption, which is currently supplied entirely by imports due to the lack of limestone resources. The project has an estimated cost of €22 million and the requested loan amount is €11 million. A decision on the funding is set to be made on 27 February.
IFC’s review of the project included a visit to the project site and a review all the information, including the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment, social management plans, etc.
