Messebo expansion due for completion soon
Addis Fortune reports that the Messebo Cement plant is currently being expanded from 2000 to 6000 tpd. It was originally scheduled for completion in August 2010, but is now due to be completed in three to four months.
The plant, which is located in Mekele, 780 km north of Addis Ababa in Tigray State and which was established in 2001, ceased firing imported furnace oil six months ago and replaced it with 80% of locally mined Dilbi Coal, and 20% petcoke (imported from Sudan). The company recently introduced Portland limestone cement (PLC) at the 7th Ethio-Copn International Construction Exhibition, and it is expected to be on the market in about a month. The product is useful in finishing and plastering. The company also manufactures OPC and pozollana Portland cement (PPC). It is selling OPC and PPC at around 251 Br and 199 Br per 100 kg respectively.
The 3 billion Birr expansion contract was awarded a year ago to Hance Research and Design Institute, China. The finance for the project was partially provided by the Development Bank of Ethiopia in the form of a loan of US$141.6 million of which only 15% was acquired in local currency. The company supplied the balance of the finance.
