According to data from the National Centre for Data Processing and Statistics reported by various news sources, Algerian cement imports increased by 30.11% in 1H14 at US$283.9 million from US$218.19 million in 1H13. This equates to 3.086 million tonnes, an increase of 26.55% from 2.438 million tonnes in 1H13.

The Algeria Press Service reports that the government is targeting cement capacity of 20 million tpa by 2016 and 29 million tpa by 2018. Currently, production capacity is 18 million tpa and imports make up the shortfall in supply, domestic demand being around 21 million tpa.

New plants are in the process of being built in the country, including a new Lafarge plant featuring a Gebr. Pfeiffer MVR mill with MultiDrive and a JV project by PPC and Hodna Cement, which is building a 2 million tpa cement plant.
