The USGS has released its latest Mineral Industry Survey for the cement industry in the US and Puerto Rico. In September 2013, clinker production increased by 6% y/y to 6.4 million t, with accumulated sales in the first nine months of the year rising by 3% y/y to 51.6 million t.
Shipments of Portland and blended cement were also higher than in the corresponding period in 2012, growing by 4% to reach 61.6 million t. In September alone, cement shipments came in at 7.9 million t, up 14% y/y. During the month, the biggest consumer states were Texas, California, Florida, Illinois and Ohio, which collectively received 35% of shipments. The top three producing states were Missouri, Texas and California.
Shipments of masonry cement improved by 7% y/y in January – September 2013. In September, shipments reached 187 000 t, around 18% higher than in September 2012. The leading consumer states of masonry cement in September were Florida, Texas, California, North Carolina and Tennessee. Together, these states received approximately 48% of the month’s shipments.
