Heidelberg Materials UK has supplied bespoke concrete to refurbish one of the popular visitor attractions at Hertfordshire Zoo in Broxbourne.
Around 30 cubic metres of waterproof ColourCrete coloured concrete in Cotswold has been used at Boulders Beach Splash Park to replicate the colour of the beach at its name sake in Cape Town, South Africa.
The waterproof concrete also contains the Sika Watertight Concrete System to prevent water ingress and was installed by contractor Decorative Concrete Specialists Ltd prior to the water park reopening for the summer months.
Heidelberg Materials’ ColourCrete range can be used wherever conventional concrete is specified and can be used to allow projects to blend with their surroundings or stand out from the crowd. There are nine standard colours in the range, which are achieved using a colour-fast admixture supplied by Hatcrete, and custom colours can also be supplied.
“All of our concretes can be supplied as coloured concrete, providing design flexibility across a wide range of applications,” said Lee Netting, Regional Director at Heidelberg Materials UK.
“The precision-manufactured admixture ensures consistent colour across batches and is fade resistant. It was the perfect solution for the zoo’s splash park to replicate the colour of a sandy beach while providing the durability and low maintenance benefits of concrete.”
Barry Pimble, Managing Director at Decorative Concrete Specialists Ltd, added: “We have a long-standing relationship with Heidelberg Materials and the communication and attention to detail on this project were excellent.
“We have previously used the same concrete at another water play park with excellent results so it was an obvious choice for us to replicate that at Hertfordshire Zoo.”
