Eagle Materials Inc. has entered into an agreement with Lafarge North America to purchase Lafarge’s Sugar Creek cement plant in Missouri and Tulsa cement plant in Oklahoma, which have a total production capacity of 1.6 million t. In addition, it will also acquire Lafarge’s related assets, including two aggregate quarries, six distribution terminals, eight ready-mix concrete plants and its flyash business.
Pending regulatory approvals, the US$446 million acquisition will close in November or December 2012. Eagle plans to supply some Lafarge operations with cement for 4 – 5 years, and an agreement is to be established with a Lafarge affiliate for the supply of low-cost alternative fuels to the purchased operations.
The acquisition will boost Eagle’s cement capacity in the US by approximately 60%, leaving Lafarge with a cement production capacity of 11 million t across its nine cement and grinding plants in the country.
