LafargeHolcim ready-mixed concrete plants in Burlington and Edmonton, Canada, have obtained the Concrete Sustainability Council (CSC) for responsibly-sourced concrete. The plants achieved bronze-level certification for operating in an environmentally, socially, and economically responsible way.
The plants were particularly recognised for having a clear chain of custody for materials, LafargeHolcim said, demonstrating a commitment to responsible sourcing. The plants also achieved zero wastewater discharge due to high recycled water use, as well as having strong health and safety programmes.
The certificates mark the first time the plants of building materials company in North America have been recognised by CSC.
“We are very proud being the first to receive this certification in North America and to supply certified responsibly sourced concrete to our customers We consider sustainability to be both a responsibility and a business opportunity,” Pascal Casanova, Region Head North America of LafargeHolcim said in a statement. “We encourage the whole construction sector to play its part in responsibly sourcing concrete.”
The CSC Responsible Sourcing System for Concrete has been developed by the CSC with input from the concrete industry, including LafargeHolcim, which is a founding member of the council, as well as certification institutes. The system is designed to provide transparency on the environmental, social, and economic responsibility of concrete, cement, and aggregates companies’ operations and their supply chains.
