Global lime company, Carmeuse, recently acquired a CAT simulator to train new employees to handle the heavy equipment used in the company’s quarries. The simulator has been installed initially at the Longview plant in Saginaw, Alabama, but will move to various locations through the year.
The simulator can be used to train operators on Catepillar loaders, haul trucks, graders, and dozers, providing a controlled environment in which to train new operators. This increases safety and reduces maintenance costs, as well as reducing disruption to production caused by pulling equipment off the job for training.
“Through the simulator, Carmeuse is embracing technology and increasing skills and technology on the job,” said Glen Williams, CAT Training Programme Manager. “It is a revolutionary way to training existing and new employees. It allows for more comprehensive learning, and the operator can gain confidence before using the actual equipment.”
The simulator and mobile classroom will be located in Longview until April. After that, it will be moved to other Carmeuse locations for training throughout the year. It will also be used at job fairs and high schools to promote careers in the industry to young people.
“The lack of young people going into the skilled trades industry has created a gap,” said Williams. “We are hoping the right technology and programmes will close this gap within Carmeuse.”
