Cemex has announced the results of investing in equipment and processes for the use of alternative fuels at its cement plants. Since 2005, US$175 million has been invested in using alternative fuels to feed cement kilns, resulting in an alternative fuel substitution rate of 25% in 2011. As a result, Cemex was able to cut CO2 emissions by 1.8 million t and avoid using 2 million t of coal in its plants. The company aims to achieve a 35% fuel substitution rate by 2015 and is currently on target to reach this goal.
Cemex UK and SITA UK are joining forces to develop two waste recycling plants for the production of Climafuel for Cemex’s Rugby cement plant in the UK.
