Titan America SA have announced that Titan Virginia Ready-Mix LLC and Roanoke Cement Company LLC, both Titan America companies, were recognised by the National Ready Mix Concrete Association with a 2025 Concrete Innovations Award for their design and paving project at Norfapeake Terminal LLC.
The Norfapeake marine terminal in Chesapeake was recently enhanced with a cement storage dome capable of housing approximately 70 000 t of cement, as well as increased trucking and rail capacity to meet the demand for its low-carbon cements. TVRM and RCC used this major investment as an opportunity to prove out the latest cement technology at scale and under harsh conditions. The performance of Type IT cement was crucial because the terminal abuts the brackish water of the Elizabeth River and is subject to freezing and thawing cycles and receives de-icing salts throughout the winter to maintain the 24/7 load out traffic.
The specific concrete mix not only utilised Type IT low-carbon cement, a ternary blended cement with up to 24% less embodied carbon, but also incorporated additional Titan-branded ProAsh® fly ash at the batching stage, which provides further improved workability, durability, and CO2 reduction associated with Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs). TVRM utilises AI-supported mix formulation techniques that drive further improvements in concrete performance.
“The important concrete qualities of placement, finish, strength at all ages, and resilience to the elements were all met, and exceeded ordinary portland cement for this active storage area on the water,” said Eric Koehler, Vice President of Innovation and Product Quality at Titan America. “Now after more than a year in service, the 26 000 square-foot paving, at a depth of eight inches, has provided a proof in performance for the low-carbon concrete in a mission-critical setting.”
RCC continues to make investments in next generation cementitious materials. In 2024, RCC was awarded a US$61.7 million grant from the US Department of Energy to build a first-of-its-kind calcined clay product line. The project will enable the production of limestone calcined-clay cement, (LC3), a high-performance, low-carbon product made with domestically available raw material.
