US: shipments of Portland and blended cement up 10% in October 2014

Data released by the USGS reveals that shipments of Portland and blended cement in the US and Puerto Rico increased by 10% y/y in October 2014 to reach 9.6 million t. Texas, Missouri, California, Michigan and Alabama accounted for 42% of the month’s Portland cement output, while Texas, California, Florida, Ohio and Illinois received some 37% of the shipments. In January – October 2014, total shipments were 8% higher than in the corresponding period in 2013, rising to approximately 75.8 million t.

In the first ten months of the year, clinker production came in at 61.7 million t, up 6% y/y. In October 2014 alone, production reached 7.1 million t, an increase of 6% y/y. Texas, Missouri, California, Alabama and Florida were the biggest clinker-producing states in October.

Finally, masonry cement shipments grew by 6% y/y to 1.93 million t in January – October 2014, but declined by almost 3% y/y to 213 000 t in October alone.

Poor weather impacts limestone trade on the Great Lakes

Both coal and limestone trade fell on the Great Lakes in November 2014 due to harsh weather conditions; the Lake Carriers’ Association has called for a second heavy icebreaker to help keep shipping lanes open during freezing weather.
