World Cement,

Cemex has joined forces with Banamex and Mexican boxer Saúl “Canelo” Alvarez to help those in Quechultenango in the state of Guerrero, Mexico, who were affected by the tropical storms Ingrid and Manuel. The storms caused flooding, damaging homes in the region. Banamex opened an account in Mexico to receive donations for those impacted, which is still open.

The MEX$11 million project will make repairs or replace the homes of 407 families. The initiative will also see three schools repaired and equipped, and 330 families will receive concrete ecological stoves. The project commenced on 6 January and is expected to be completed by April 2014.

“Cemex contributes additionally to this effort by coordinating and supervising the reconstruction, and managing the projects together with the authorities”, said Martha Herrera, Social Responsibility Director of Cemex. “However, the citizens’ participation is very important, given that the only way to achieve our goals of helping all the affected families and acting with efficiency is by joining efforts and sharing the responsibility we have as a society”.
