Holcim México has announced a strategic investment of 56 million pesos to significantly expand its production and distribution capacity for ECOPact, its low-carbon concrete. This investment includes the installation of 27 silos, with a total capacity of 2600 tons of sustainable cement, across all its ready-mix plants nationwide.

This initiative responds to the growing energy demand and emissions from the building and construction sector, which account for more than one-fifth of global emissions, according to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Holcim México’s commitment highlights its drive toward low-carbon construction and the promotion of a circular economy.

The investment marks a milestone in transforming the Mexican construction industry, signalling a tangible step toward a more sustainable future. ECOPact, Holcim’s sustainable concrete, reduces CO2 emissions by at least 30% compared to conventional concrete. Just four years after its launch, it has already been used in major regional infrastructure, building, and housing projects, such as the Presa Libertad dam in Nuevo León, where it helped avoid 80 000 t of CO2 — equivalent to the annual electricity consumption emissions of 11 000 homes — and Torre Moranta, the first project in Mexico built 100% with ECOPact, reducing 1520 t of CO2.

“Sustainable construction is both a necessity and a tremendous opportunity for Mexico’s development, driven by urbanisation and large-scale infrastructure initiatives. With ECOPact, we’re offering more than a product — we’re delivering a tangible solution to build a cleaner, more resilient, and competitive country. This strategic investment reinforces our vision of building progress for people and the planet, with a firm commitment to decarbonising the construction industry,” said Mónica Fernández, Director of Ready-Mix and Aggregates Sales at Holcim México.

Holcim México projects that ECOPact will account for 25% of its total concrete sales this year, and 50% by 2030. In 2024, thanks to ECOPact and other sustainable solutions such as ECOPlanet — which already accounts for 56% of cement sales with up to 65% CO2 emissions reduction — Holcim mitigated 1.7 million t of COin Mexico. Holcim thus positions itself as a leader in emissions reduction in the Mexican construction sector, aligned with its global decarbonisation strategy.

Through this initiative, Holcim México calls on developers, investors, and authorities to transform how construction is done in the country — by adopting innovative, environmentally responsible materials to meet the growing needs for urbanisation and affordable housing in Mexico.
