50th anniversary of IEEE-IAS

World Cement,

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Industry Applications Society (IAS), which was formed in 1965 to provide a means to link research to practice. The IAS was a new component of a relatively new institution – the IEEE itself was only officially formed in 1963. Rod Simmons provides a little background:

“The IEEE was formed when AIEE (American Institute of Electrical Engineers) and IRE (Institute of Radio Engineers) merged in 1963. The AIEE was originally formed in 1884 and included such notable characters as Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Edison. While there are a variety of different types of branches, of greatest interest to the cement industry is the Industry Application Society. With members in more than 65 countries, the IEEE IAS is one of the world’s largest organisations specialising in global design, development, application and management of electrical and electronic systems, apparatus, devices and controls. A society within IEEE provides an organisational structure whereby the members can interface with other professionals in the same field. In this case the society is generally based on the application of electrical and electronics within industry. This society is further divided into committees based on specific industries. The scope of the CIC is the treatment of all matters within the scope of the IAS in which the emphasis or dominant factor specifically relates to the manufacture of cement.”

The following video was presented at the IEEE-IAS/PCA Cement Industry Technical Conference and celebrates 50 years of the Industry Applications Society.
