The new Hägglunds Thunder is a fully electric, frequency-controlled drive solution that incorporates the established principles of Hägglunds drive technology.
Gearless drive solutions from Hägglunds are recognised for their high torque, reliability and flexibility. With the introduction of Hägglunds Thunder, the company adds a new approach to achieving these characteristics. Based on permanent magnet (PM) synchronous motor technology, Hägglunds Thunder represents a fully electric development within Hägglunds’ industrial direct drive offering.
Enabling a fully electric Hägglunds direct drive
A PM synchronous torque motor is a multi-pole electric motor capable of delivering high torque comparable to that of existing Hägglunds motors. By enabling a fully electric, frequency-controlled drive solution from low to megawatt power levels, Hägglunds Thunder provides an additional option within the Hägglunds portfolio.
“PM synchronous motors are a well-known technology with untapped potential in heavy-duty industrial applications,” says Tor Jensen, Vice President Hägglunds Global Sales. “Our focus on dependable and versatile direct drive solutions remains unchanged. With Hägglunds Thunder complementing our electrohydraulic portfolio, we can offer a true Hägglunds solution with different drive characteristics, providing new options for specific customer requirements.”
Amplified power with efficiency and protection
While Hägglunds Thunder fits within the established Hägglunds product range, it delivers a distinct performance profile. The motor range has a nominal torque of up to 200 kNm and offers fully variable speed from standstill. Nominal operating speed begins at 30 rpm – slightly higher than comparable electrohydraulic systems – and extends up to 300 rpm, maintaining high efficiency throughout its operating range.
“Customers requiring extremely high torque at very low speeds will continue to be best served by Hägglunds electrohydraulic solutions,” explains Uno Sundelin, Project Manager for Hägglunds Thunder. “However, where torque and speed requirements align, Hägglunds Thunder can provide direct drive solutions delivering up to 4300 kW of power.” In addition to its efficiency, Hägglunds Thunder offers robust protection, withstanding 200% overload for up to 60 seconds. According to Sundelin, this performance aligns with the reliability standards expected of Hägglunds systems.
