India’s ACC, part of the LafargeHolcim group, is reportedly set to partner with dealers and social organisations in a series of brick-making joint ventures. Local media indicate that the company plans to add 26 brick-making units in the next 7 months, to add to its existing portfolio of 19 brick units, based largely in northern and eastern India. The units would have to source cement from ACC, which would provide the expertise and technical support, but the JV partner would own and operate the units.
The plan ties in with ACC’s strategy of increasing focus on value-added products and retaining its market share in rural areas. Even some red brick manufacturers have been convinced to join the scheme, agreeing to close their red brick kilns and replace production with cement bricks, which are said to be better quality, larger than red bricks and less water absorbent. Though they are more expensive per brick, they are said to be more cost-effective.
