Cement consumption in Andalucía fell by 11% y/y in October 2014, dropping to 175 382 t. In the first ten months of the year, consumption in the region totalled approximately 1.52 million t, down 2.9% y/y.
As a point of comparison, cement consumption in Cataluña grew by 4.3% y/y in October 2014. In Spain as a whole, domestic consumption was up 5% y/y to around 1.04 million t during the month.
Cement consumption is projected to reach 1.8 million t in 2014 in Andalucía, a decline of 2% y/y and one of the lowest figures in the last 50 years.
Rather than combining their operations in Spain as originally announced, Cemex will acquire Holcim’s Gador cement plant and Yeles grinding facility and Holcim will retain its remaining assets in the country.
Cemex has marked the culmination of its 2006 – 2014 programme of environmental improvements at the Lloseta cement plant in Mallorca, which has led to reduced noise and dust levels, lower carbon emissions and increased alternative fuel utilisation.
Lafarge Spain has named Maruxa Suárez as Director of the Villaluenga de la Sagra cement plant in Toledo, the first time that a woman has held this position in Spain.
