Aker Solutions has been awarded a contract for a concept study for carbon capture at Norcem’s cement plant in Brevik, Norway. Norcem is among three companies in the running to receive funding from the Norwegian government to build and operate a full-scale carbon capture plant.
“Perfecting carbon capture will be key to meeting global climate goals,” said Luis Araujo, CEO of Aker Solutions, in a statement.
Aker Solutions has previously carried out testing with a pilot carbon capture plant at Norcem’s plant in Brevik. The results of this testing were sufficiently promising that Norcem selected the technology for its bid for funding.
The new concept study will design a carbon capture plant that is integrated with the cement factory, including a process to turn the captured CO2 into liquid and storage facilities that can be used before shipping. The plant will have a capacity of about 0.4 million tpy of CO2.
The Norwegian government aims to fund at least one carbon capture plant, which would be operational by 2022. Other projects in the running include Yara’s ammonia plant on Herøya.
