At its annual awards, the Lafarge group recognised Lafarge UK’s Cauldon site for its sustainability achievements. The Staffordshire plant has reduced its reliance on fossil fuels by 50% and is the third of Lafarge’s 166 sites worldwide to run the calciner with 100% waste-derived sustainable fuels. Processed sewage pellets and tyre chips replaced traditional fuels in the calciner, which accounts for 60% of total fuel consumption, during a 10-hour trial period.
“We are aware that environmental legislation across the construction sector will increase in the near future and we want to be sure that we have measures in place to stay at the forefront for environmental performance and delivering sustainably-produced products to our customers,” said Andy Woodcock, Optimisation Manager at the Cauldon site.
“We’re pleased to announce this development which will help us continue to reduce our carbon footprint and reinforce our position as Lafarge UK’s flagship Works for the use of waste-derived fuels,” he added.
