LTI free decade breaks Lafarge safety record

World Cement,

Lafarge UK’s Cookstown Cement Works have set a new safety record for the company after achieving a decade without ‘Lost Injury Time’ (LTI). In the last 10 years no injuries have occurred which prevented workers from returning to the 0.5 million tpa cement plant the following day. The team, consisting of 80 employees as well as contractors, have not only broken their own safety record, they are also the first to achieve an LTI free decade out of all Lafarge’s 170 production sites worldwide.

William McGucken, Manager of the Cookstown Works, said of the achievement: “This is a proud moment for the team here at Cookstown Works. Through continued hard work and constant vigilance on safety in all aspects of our operation, we have managed to maintain our safety performance and achieve this fantastic record. I congratulate everyone who has played a part.”

As a reward for their safety success, staff were given the opportunity to get close to the FA cup won by Manchester City last season. An additional celebration has been organised for the employees at a local venue.

Commenting on the new record set by the plant, Dyfrig James, President of Lafarge UK, said: “My congratulations go to the whole Cookstown Works team of employees and contractors for achieving this world first for Lafarge’s cement business. This team is an inspiration for all of us across the Lafarge Group and we will be working hard to ensure their approach to safety is used as an example to follow at other sites. Well done.”
