Cement joint venture discussed for Irish and UK businesses

World Cement,

Cement joint venture

Lagan Cement Group Ltd and Quinn Building Products have signed a memorandum of understanding with the aim of establishing a joint venture. The enterprise would involve their cement and building products businesses in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, namely in Ballyconnell, Derrylin, Kinnegad, Belfast, Cork and Benelux. These include Lagan Cement’s concrete, cement, quarry and roof tile operations, and Quinn Building Group’s cement, roof tiles, pre-stress, light weight blocks and quarry operations. However, it will exclude Quinn Therm, Quinn Litepac, Quinn Tarmac and Lagan Sand. Discussions about the proposal are estimated to take three months and are subject to approval from the Competition Authority.

Alternative fuels

Quinn Manufacturing has also announced plans to upgrade its Ballyconnell cement plant in order to allow for alternative fuel use. Solid recovered fuels will replace coal as the primary fuel source. The project represents an investment of €15 million.
