Holcim warns that EU emissions targets could force cement companies to relocate

World Cement,

Holcim has warned that stricter EU targets to curb carbon emissions could force cement producers to relocate their facilities outside the region. The EU has revealed that it will further its target to reduce emissions by 30% by 2020 if other regions are prepared to follow suit.

Ruksana Mirza, Holcim's Head of Sustainable Development, said “Holcim supports the transition to a low-carbon economy, but the problem here lies in doing this in a way that does not disadvantage industry in Europe.” Mirza also pointed out that with companies relocating outside Europe, net emissions may actually be increased as cement has to be transported greater distances.

Holcim has set itself a target to reduce its carbon emissions by 25% by 2015 compared to 1990 levels.
