Carbon capture volume at Rohrdorfer pilot plant doubled

Rohrdorfer has increased the capacity of the pilot CO2 capture plant at the Rohrdorf cement plant to up to 99%

Instead of the previous 900 kg per day, up to two metric tons of CO2 can now be captured daily. This is made possible by a second absorption column, which was successfully installed in March. The second column is installed directly behind the first. The flue gas flows through the columns one after the other, thereby increasing its contact time with the amine wash solution contained within them. The CO2-laden amine wash solution is withdrawn at the bottom of the columns for regeneration. The solution is then purified and reused multiple times.

Oxygen removal extends the service life of the amine scrubbing solution

To improve COquality and further extend the service life of the scrubbing solution, an Oxystripper from ANDRITZ has been in use since early July. This unit removes physically bound oxygen from the amine by creating a vacuum. At the same time, further optimisation measures can significantly reduce the oxygen concentration. As a result, the Oxystripper reduces the oxygen concentration by approximately 90%.

Significant progress toward meeting co2 storage requirements

“Since the capture plant went online, we have been working consistently to further increase the plant’s performance and energy efficiency. With the second column and the oxystripper, we have reached an important milestone in this effort. At the same time, these measures have enabled us to further improve CO2 quality in a targeted manner and to come significantly closer to meeting the very challenging requirements for storage,” says Christian Räthel, Head of CCUS at the Rohrdorf Net Zero Emission Team.
