Tororo Cement Limited (TCL), Uganda’s largest manufacturer of cement and steel, has become the latest company to join the Uganda Chamber of Mines and Petroleum (UCMP). The cement producer is expected to bring considerable prestige to the organisation due to its prevalence in the Ugandan mining sector.
TCL has an installed production capacity of 1.8 million t, which increased from 1.4 million t following the installation of new technology, a grinding mill, rotary packers and storage silos at its facility in Eastern Uganda (around 230 km from Kampala). A statement released by UCMP notes that TCL has strived to retain its position at the very top of the Ugandan mining sector, operating in the Tororo, Kapchorwa and Moroto districts. According to B.M. Gagrani, Managing Director of TCL, the company complies with the country’s mining and environmental regulations and contributes approximately USh1.5 billion (US$600 000) per year to the exchequer.
As a new member of UCMP, which aims to encourage, protect and foster responsible exploration and participation in the mining and petroleum sectors, TCL will benefit from improved relations with the Ugandan government.
