Green Cement: Thermo activated clay, a low emissions solution

Tomás Restrepo, Colombia Regional Vice-President, will show how Cementos Argos is working to change the way that cement is produced.

Green Cement is the first product launched as a result of an ambitious project, which included the expansion of capacity at the company’s Rioclaro plant in Colombia.

Tomás will show how this initiative, in which the company invested US$78 million for the assembly of a new clay activation line (450 000 tpy), allowed enabled the launch its new product, Green Cement, a pioneering solution which allows for a 38% reduction in CO2 emissions and a 30% reduction in energy consumption. The presentation will also discuss the use of blending technology in the manufacturing process, which allows for significant process efficiencies, opens the door to the creation of new products in accordance with customer demand.

This new production line makes it possible for the company to be more flexible and to advance the new paradigm of raw materials in the cement industry as the availability of alternative cementitious materials is very limited in relation to global demand.

Tomás will explain how this investment contributes towards the fulfilment of the company’s goal of a 25% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2025 and the replacement of 15% of raw materials with alternatives. He will also highlight how sustainability is a key aspect of the company’s business model and how Argos aims to create value for society as well as the company.

With this new production line in operation, and the modern Cartagena Plant and other facilities in Colombia, Argos is placed as a leading producer of cement and concrete in the country. It also confirms the company’s position as one of the most innovative cement companies in the country and one of the most sustainable in the world.
