Solidia Technologies enters into R&D agreement with US Federal Highway Administration

World Cement,

Solidia Technologies® has entered into a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with the US Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The agreement will evaluate and develop sustainable and durable cement and concrete for use in transportation infrastructure applications. The CRADA enables the FWHA’s Federal laboratory, the Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center in McLean, Va., to collaborate with Solidia on research projects and provide resources other than funds.

The agreement will focus on the properties and performance of Solidia Concrete, and to a lesser extent Solidia Cement, with regards to their use in transport infrastructure applications such as traffic barriers, pavement and bridge components, culverts and sound barriers. The first phase of the project will look at properties of Solidia Concrete such as compressive strength, flexural strength and freeze-thaw durability. The results are expected to be ready in early 2014.

US-based Solidia Technologies has developed patented processes for cement and concrete production that reduce CO2 emissions, while utilising less water, lower kiln temperatures and a shorter curing time.

“The agreement with the FHWA accelerates the testing process for our new, sustainable cement and concrete and its application in the transportation infrastructure sector,” said Tom Schuler, CEO of Solidia Technologies. “We are grateful for the opportunity to work with the FHWA as we strive to bring our innovation to market.”
