Toyo-Thai awarded the construction contract for carbon capture project

World Cement,

Skyonic Corporation has awarded Toyo-Thai-USA Corporation the contract for the construction of the Capitol SkyMine plant at the Capitol Aggregates Cement Plant in San Antonio, Texas.

The Capitol SkyMine® will capture carbon dioxide, acid gases and heavy metals from flue gas at the cement plant, before converting them into solid products, such as sodium bicarbonate, and selling them as safe, stable solids. Byproducts that are produced during the process, e.g. hydrochloric acid and bleach, will also be sold. The efficiency of the carbon capture technology, combined with the ability to sell produced solids and byproducts, can help cement plants to earn a profit while reducing emissions.

Toyo-Thai Corporation Public Company Ltd (TTCL), who has invested US$1 million in Skyonic, will provide engineering, procurement and construction services on the project. The construction contract is worth US$117 million.

“This is our first entry into North America as a full EPC provider and we are looking forward to the experience,” commented Hironobu Iriya, President & CEO of TTCL. “Building Capitol SkyMine® plant, the first commercial scale carbon capture and utilisation plant in the US, will have global implications and our experience in the energy market makes us an ideal partner for this project.”
