New treated clinical waste plant to provide RDF for the cement industry

World Cement,

SRCL has opened a new alternative treatment plant in Knowsley, UK. The plant will process up to 48 tpd of treated clinical waste, recovering 100% of it as refused-derived fuel, which will be utilised by the cement industry.

The clinical waste comes from private healthcare companies and the UK’s National Health Service (NHS). To celebrate the plant opening, representatives from these organisations were invited to tour the facility and to learn more about the chemical-free sterilisation process for clinical waste.

The new plant will avoid 4500 tpa of the waste going to landfill. In addition to supplying the cement sector within an alternative fuel source, the facility will also help healthcare organisations to meet their sustainability targets. The NHS, for example, aims to reduce CO2 by 34% by 2020.
