The Korea Economic Daily has reported that Posco E&C Australia Pty Ltd, a division of Posco Engineering & Construction, is to build a new cement plant in East Timor (otherwise known as Timor-Leste). Posco E&C is a global construction company with experience in engineering, new city development and architecture, social overhead capital and construction for steel plants, power plants and environmental plants. The company is expanding its business in Southeast Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Eastern Europe.

The US$350 million project was awarded to the company by BGC, an Australian group that specialises in residential and commercial building, building and construction products manufacture and civil engineering construction and maintenance, amongst other things.

The new cement plant will be built in Baucau, 120 km east of East Timor’s capital, Dili, and construction is expected to last around 34 months. The plant will be owned by BGC but Posco E&C Australia will be responsible for the whole construction process, including engineering and procurement. This large-scale project comes as part of government plans to encourage infrastructure development in the country.
